POLICY

PRACTICUM PLACEMENTS

Before beginning placement, practicum students are interviewed by the staff person who would serve as the practicum's supervisor.  The field instructor from their respective college/university acts as a liaison between the agency and the school. If the student is placed, one professional is assigned as the primary practicum instructor. The student is briefed about the facility, cleared for confidentiality and a personnel record is maintained.

A practicum program is entered into contractually among the field instructor, the student and the Tanager Place supervisor.  Areas covered in a practicum student placement are tailored to the student's needs and the program's needs.

Experiences may include individual counseling, group counseling, co-facilitation, attending treatment team meetings or working with childcare staff in the cottage milieu.  Any written entries made by practicum students and entered in the permanent record are generally countersigned by the supervisor or the supervisor's designee.

Practicum students are not allowed to drive agency vehicles or purchase for the agency.  Referring workers are to be notified if their client will experience considerable and significant time with a practicum student.  Undergraduate practicum students shall be an addition to the program staff and will not be used as a staff replacement.  Graduate students will also be closely supervised in their provision of direct services.
