Why Tanager Place?

Founded in 1879 by Cedar Rapids volunteers and for many years known as the Children’s Home of Cedar Rapids, Tanager Place is one of the oldest children’s agencies in Iowa.

Tanager Place has the only camp program in Iowa that offers seven one-week sessions that are free to disadvantaged children.

Camp Tanager also conducts the only camp in Iowa for children with hemophilia and is one of only two camps that serve children with diabetes.

Tanager Place is the only children’s agency with an Expressive Arts program. This program, which is unique to Tanager Place, helps children to communicate through the visual arts, music and creative writing.

Tanager Place created the level of care referred to as PMIC (Psychiatric Medical Institute for Children) and was the first such facility in the state of Iowa.

Tanager Place founded the Child and Family Policy Center, a nonprofit policy center linking research on children and families with public policy, dedicated to strengthening Iowa families and providing development opportunities for Iowa’s children.

Tanager Place, in collaboration with The Arc of East Central Iowa, opened an 8-bed Intermediate Care Facility for the Mentally Retarded, a new and innovative program for children with both behavioral and intellectual disabilities.

Tanager Place Mental Health Clinic is one of only two outpatient clinics in Iowa specializing in the treatment of children.
