Camp Tanager
Established in 1926 as a private, non-profit camp for children with health problems, today, Camp Tanager serves over 500 economically disadvantaged children each summer. Referrals were received from area school counselors and were received from 88 different schools in Linn and surrounding counties. In the last 30 years, donors have made it possible for 18,000 at-risk children to experience the magic of childhood at Camp Tanager free of charge. Camp provides rich educational experiences for campers in an atmosphere of fun!
Diabetes Camp
The Diabetes Camp at Camp Tanager provides children and adolescents with diabetes a safe and healthy environment to enjoy a variety of educational and recreational activities under the direct supervision of a trained medical staff. Thoughtful programming provides children with diabetes a better understanding of their disorder during their stay. Diabetes Camp began in 1987 and serves 50-60 children annually. The camp has on-site 24-hour physicians and medical team provided by both St. Luke’s Hospital and Mercy Medical Center.
Hemophilia Camp
The Hemophilia Camp at Camp Tanager is one of a kind in the Midwest. During the six-day camp, children with hemophilia and their siblings participate in individual and group activities designed for fun and fitness. Campers also gain a better understanding of hemophilia and its effects on individuals and families. Hemophilia Camp has the support of Hemophilia of Iowa and a medical team from the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. This special camp began in 1986 and serves 50-60 children with hemophilia and bleeding disorders and their siblings each year.
Facilities
Camp Tanager is administered by Tanager Place. Located four miles east of Cedar Rapids, the camp features an all-season facility with kitchens, meeting areas and sleeping quarters. The three main sleeping cabins can house up to 72 campers. The teepee village and platform tent area also serve as additional sleeping experiences. The site features a zero depth entry swimming pool, basketball court, sand volleyball court, baseball diamond and archery range. With nearly 24 acres of land, hiking trails and athletic fields, there is always something for everyone at Camp Tanager.
