Tanager Place School
The campus school program provides individual and group instruction to fit the student’s individual needs. The K-12 curriculum is directed toward students who cannot function successfully in public school settings and emphasizes developing appropriate classroom behavior and life skills. Our program meets all of the Iowa Department of Education academic requirements, teachers are fully certified and all high school credits are transferable.
Tanager Place was Iowa’s first Psychiatric Medical Institution for Children (PMIC). As a pioneer in the treatment of children with psychological issues, our success has always been based on our belief in the potential of each child.
Our program is designed to help all children master basic living and coping skills in order to become productive and caring adults. Daily structured activities include family, individual and group treatment, recreational activities, off campus outings and Expressive Arts opportunities.
Our Inpatient program is located on 24-acres in southwest Cedar Rapids, Iowa. There are six cottages with 8-12 children in each cottage. Each cottage has unique characteristics. Most children have their own private bedroom and a shared bathroom. Cottages have a family room, game room, study areas, dining room and kitchen facilities. Children are asked to share in the responsibility of caring for the cottage throughout the week and have specific duties to help build time management and basic living skills. Each cottage has unique characteristics. The clinical team will identify the environment where the child is most likely to be successful.
Terry Cottage is a specialized, one-of-a-kind program for children who have both intellectual disabilities and psychological disorders. This program is designed for children with an IQ score between 55-75.
Individualized treatment goals are designed by our experienced team of professionals, which includes a child psychiatrist, psychologist, therapists, nurses, teachers and cottage staff. The Tanager Place staff, the child and family will work as a team to develop and implement an individualized treatment plan.
