This workshop will assist play therapists in exploring common obstacles to engaging families and parents in the play therapy process. It is common for most training programs to focus on individual aspects of treatment which can create stress for play therapists as they see needed changes within the family system, or needed support, engagement, and therapeutic relationship with parents. This workshop will assist play therapists in exploring their own beliefs, experiences, and goals for engaging parents and families in play therapy as well as some of the common myths and barriers, while also learning simple techniques and ways to reframe the work that needs to be done to feel more successful and competent in working with families and parents outside the play room.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Attendees will learn about why engaging parents and families are important to engage in play therapy from a child development and the family/parental role perspective.
  2. Attendees will identify their beliefs, bias, areas of transference, and goals for working with parents and families of play therapy clients.
  3. Attendees will learn techniques built on play therapy interventions to build relationships and engage families and caregivers.
  4. Attendees will practice skills learned through role playing common “play therapy scenarios” in which family/caregiver participation would improve the outcome.
