Trauma Informed Schools
The concentration of this training will be to explore the 10 steps in creating a trauma informed school. The focus will be on the school as the change agent, an interconnected team, including mental health and child care practitioners, that supports healthy development of children, ultimately creating a thriving school. Participants will also learn how to integrate ACE information into practice while learning and practicing strategies and activities that support nurturing, positive relationships and appropriate learning experiences in a trauma-informed school setting. The participants will also learn about concepts from the Circle of Courage as a model for student success in the school setting.
- The learner will understand the impact of adverse childhood experience on individuals throughout their lifespan.
- The learner will identify at least 4 strategies to making their school trauma informed.
- The learner will differentiate between time in and time out intervention approaches.
- The learner will describe at least 3 ways school professionals can better connect with students.
- The learner will be able to name at least 3 strategies for reducing aggression in traumatized students.
The course consists of a live showing of the documentary Paper Tigers, the book 10 Steps to Create a Trauma Informed School, by Dr. Caelan Soma and Derek Allen as well as a pdf of TLC’s 97 page Trauma-Informed Schools Guidebook.

Trainer: Tonya serves as Director of Clinical Services for outpatient therapy at the Tanager Place Behavioral Health Clinic and for the Tanager Place School Based Program. Tonya is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist as well as a Registered Play Therapist and Certified Trauma Practitioner. Tonya is a Certified Trainer for the Starr Global Learning Network, providing trauma trainings to practitioners, agencies and schools. Tonya has advanced training in Theraplay, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, Sand Tray and Play Therapy. Tonya is often utilized in the Cedar Rapids and surrounding districts as a trainer and consultant for working with children with mental health and trauma. Tonya’s service to Tanager Place began in 2009, and since then her expertise has helped grow their outpatient programs and enabled children to have greater resiliency and positive outcomes.
