Through Freedom Schools, this Scholar discovered the power of self-expression and the courage to share their voice with the world. Writing became a meaningful outlet for growth, reflection, and creativity, helping them develop a voice that is strong, authentic, and inspiring.

We are honored to share that their original poem, “Have Courage,” was recently accepted by the American Library of Poetry for publication. This recognition not only celebrates their literary talent, but also reflects the confidence, resilience, and personal growth they’ve developed through this journey.

We invite you to read their moving words below:

HAVE COURAGE
By a Freedom Schools Scholar

Have courage, Have courage, be strong
Have courage, Have courage, push through it.
Have courage, Have courage, find the light in the dark room
Have courage, Have courage, for times like these be strong…they shall not last long.
Have courage, Have courage, trust that there is a purpose.
Have courage, Have courage, even if it takes years for the scars to heal.
Have courage, Have courage, trust that there is a purpose for everything, even you.
Have courage, Have courage, even if you feel broken, your pieces are still there for you to pick up.
Have courage, Have courage!
