The Volk Legacy Society is a community of individuals and couples who have chosen to invest in Tanager’s future through planned giving or significant lifetime contributions. These gifts help ensure that children, families, and communities can continue to access the care, support, and opportunities they need for generations to come.
Established in 2001, the society brings together people who share a commitment to lasting change. Today, it includes more than 40 individuals and couples who have included Tanager in their long-term philanthropic plans, alongside more than 170 individuals and couples who have contributed planned gifts.
Whether you choose to include Tanager in your will, designate a beneficiary, or explore another giving option, you can help build a future where children and families continue to find hope, healing, and the opportunity to thrive.
The Volk Legacy Story
Raymond and Louise Volk lived humble, hardworking lives in Cedar Rapids.
They didn’t seek attention, but they carried a profound love for children and a shared desire to improve lives. After Raymond’s passing, Louise visited Tanager, quietly asking thoughtful questions about how she could help.
In time, their extraordinary gift came to light. The Volks left their entire estate to Tanager, creating a transformational endowment that continues to support children and families today. Their legacy lives on—not in monuments or recognition, but in the healing and opportunity they made possible.
The generosity of the Volks helped shape Tanager's future and inspired a community of donors to carry th at commitment forward. Today, the Tanager Place Endowment Foundation is the second-largest endowment in the community, providing more than $1 million in annual support for Tanager's programs.
What It Means to Join the Volk Legacy Society
The Volk Legacy Society honors donors who, like Raymond and Louise, choose to leave a lasting legacy of generosity.
Membership in the Volk Legacy Society is open to anyone who makes a planned or deferred gift to Tanager, as well as donors who contribute a lifetime gift of $100,000 or more to the Tanager Endowment.
By joining, you help ensure that children will always have access to counseling, enrichment, and family support—no matter what the future holds.
Planned gifts are invested in the Tanager Place Endowment Foundation, helping provide sustained support for Tanager's mission. Many planned gifts are fulfilled in the future, often after a donor's lifetime, and can be arranged in ways that align with individual financial, tax, and estate-planning goals.

You can begin by sharing your planned gift intention with our Philanthropy team or completing the Volk Legacy Society enrollment form. Formal documentation of your gift commitment is optional, but it helps us understand your wishes and recognize your generosity appropriately. Many planned gift arrangements can be revised as your circumstances or intentions change.
We encourage you to discuss your plans with your financial or estate-planning advisor. Tanager's Philanthropy Team can provide additional information and sample language to help you take the next step.
